SAFFRON WALDEN BASTARDY BONDS
1669-1834

Note: Bastardy Bonds are the name given to the legal document compelling the father of an illegitimate child to contribute to its maintenance. There are over 140 of these in the Saffron Walden town archives, now digitised with ERO numbers and deposited in the Essex Record Office at Chelmsford. The reason for official concern was not so much moral, but more to do with saving the costs otherwise necessary to support the mother and child on the rates. These documents can be important to family historians, as they suggest that the carefully-constructed family trees may not be so straightforward as they seem! In most cases the original images can now be seen on SEAX and a copy printed off, but the originals are closed to public access.
