Saffron Walden Town Archives
Sacraments Certificates for
Saffron Walden
Sacrament
Certificates were a legal
requirement after the Test
Act of 1672 and were in use until 1828. The certificate was needed to
prove
that a person taking public office was taking Holy Communion according
to the
Church of England – thus it aimed to exclude Dissenters from
taking part in
local government, the magistracy etc.
The list thus reflects the Anglican elite which ruled towns at this
time. Saffron
Walden has a particularly large collection of these certificates
– 400 are
listed below, now
catalogued as ERO D/B2/QSS 7/14 onwards, dated 1703-1819. These
certificates
are part of the Saffron Walden Town Archives, but have been
re-catalogued for
digitisation by the Essex Record Office.
