Elsenham Report 2011

Over the past year the collection I am making of ancient (and Modern) photos of Elsenham continues to grow. Thanks to a Teacher from the local School I have scanned in excess of 400 pictures of past pupils. The distinction between the works I do as the History Recorder for Elsenham and the Elsenham History Society becomes even more blurred. I am the Vice-Chairman of the Local History Society and continually find that with numbers and resources they are able to tackle things I could only dream about. Wearing multiple “hats” (Parish Council, RUH Recorder and Vice Chairman), I will be involved as the Parish Council have work planned. The extremely ancient Lych Gate at the entrance to our Cemetery has withstood the ravages of time but it has taken its toll. Repairs and renovations are in hand.

The photos of past pupils are being used as the School is planning a reunion. I have found myself being approached with Genealogy queries. Most of the other tasks during 2012 were done within The Elsenham History Society. I include a list of their meetings over last year and future plans.

Ray Franklin. Elsenham History Recorder.

9 March 2011

This was the also the AGM. The officers of the Society were prepared to serve for another year and in the absence of any other nominations this was agreed without a vote.

The guest speaker was Alf Wright who gave an interesting presentation of the history of Great Easton and the life and times of Daisy, Countess of  Warwick

8 June 2011

The guest speaker was Mr Peter Paye who gave a detailed account of the history of the Elsenham to Thaxted Light Railway.

It was noted that members were looking at the 1841 and 1911 census records with a view to transcription

14 September 2011

In matters arising it was noted that members had visited Pledgdon Hall

This meeting’s guest speaker, Mr Bruce Munro gave a very interesting presentation on various aspects of Thaxted’s history and significant buildings. This found resonance with the membership who, earlier in the year had taken a guided tour of Thaxted led by Mr Munro.

9 November 2011

The meeting opened with news of a change of Secretary, Mike Rea having taken over form Chris Bush who was thanked for his efforts on behalf of the Society.

Professor Anthony Tuck was the guest speaker who gave a talk on tHe Black Death and it’s effect on life in the local area.

Reports were received from members who had partaken of a trip to the National Archives at Kew (organised by RUH).

The next meeting on 7 March will be by Tim Turner of Sworders. His talk is entitled, “Antique Fakes and Forgeries.”

Earlier in 2011 the Society had a stall at the local Fete. This will be repeated this year.
